CAMPHOR (WHITE) (Cinnamomum camphora)
Camphor essential oil is extracted from the wood, root stumps and young branches of the evergreen camphor tree. It is a native of China, Taiwan, and Japan, but is now grown as far afield as India and California.
Camphor has traditionally been worn around the neck ward off evil spirits and to strengthen the heart. It has been used as an insecticide, particularly in moth balls.
Camphor essential oil contains terpenic ketone, which is why it has such hot, pungent fumes.
In aromatherapy, Camphor oil is good for softening tight muscles. It also repels most insects.
USES Massage. Camphor essential oil should be used sparingly and must be well diluted for massaging directly into muscles. Add a few drops to a cotton ball, or the hem of curtains or blinds, for an excellent insect repellent, particularly for flies and moths.
CAUTION Camphor oil fumes are potent and should not be inhaled by asthmatics. It is safe for massage if well diluted and applied to specific areas, rather than all over the body.
